Troy Tang moved from Singapore to New Zealand at the age of eleven, leaving for a brief period of three years to undertake military service in Singapore before returning to Aotearoa. He spent his army days as part of the Singapore Music and Drama Company String Ensemble, playing the flute for numerous military, governmental, and presidential functions. It was during this time that he gained valuable insight into the life of a musician and decided that the flute was too interesting to really give up on. His past and current teachers include Adrianna Lis, Wang Tong, Kathryn Moorhead and Uwe Grodd. He is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Music conjoint at the University of Auckland.
